Office Based Mental Health Internships
We are in the process of interviewing applicants, and we are no longer able to accept applications for our scheduled March 7th and April 11th group interviews. Any applications submitted by the end of February may be considered for late April or early May group interviews pending any openings in our office or school-based programs. If you have any questions, please email .
Overview of Mental Health Internships in the Mental Health Department:
Our internship placements provide the graduate student opportunities to utilize their knowledge and coursework through engaging and assuming responsibility of select tasks for the promotion of learning under the supervision of an experienced professional.
We recognize our interns are not employees, however, they are an integral part of our clinical teams. Interns are considered primary therapists and carry a limited caseload of clients while supervised by experienced and trained clinicians. The limited caseload provides time for a variety of tasks including training, supervision, case consultation, case management, documentation (such as service notes, treatment planning, appropriate screenings, etc.), and maintenance of assigned client files.
Interns in the Mental Health Department can be part of our Office Based Teams either in Shoreline, Bothell or Edmonds; or can be part of the School Based Team based out of one of our Shoreline offices (working primarily with Edmonds, Northshore, Shoreline and Mukilteo districts). The first month of internship is focused on providing training and structure to help begin the journey as a clinician. Interns fill out a “timesheet” every month to keep track of their schedule and hours with CHS. In a “typical” 20-hour-a-week, you will spend approximately 60% in direct service, 20% in indirect service delivery such as documentation and 20% in training and supervision. A typical internship caseload will consist of 12-15 clients.
Our Mental Health Department accepts approximately 9 master’s level interns each year. Office Based MH Interns work onsite, and School Based MH Interns are working onsite at schools assigned (typically one or two schools).
Please note that interns will not be guaranteed supervision with an Approved Clinical Supervisor as these supervisors typically work with our employees, however interns will be supervised by fully licensed clinicians when possible.
MH Master’s Level Internship Stipends
CHS may offer master’s level clinical interns a stipend. Interns must be scheduled to work at least 10 hours a week in-person.
- Scheduled to work at least 10 hours per week: $250 per quarter
- Scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week: $500 per quarter
Note: The stipend will be received after completing each quarter of internships at CHS to help defray the personal costs of interning. Stipends are considered taxable by the IRS and interns who are paid $600 or more in a calendar year will receive a 1099-NEC tax form with the reported income from CHS. “Quarters” will be determined based on the onboarding date of the intern.
Office Based Master’s Level Internship Opportunities:
Office-based Mental Health: We provide mental health treatment to children, youth, and families who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. We work with such issues as depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, ADD/ADHD, and divorce as well as other family disruptions, crisis, and transitions. We use a strengths-based approach and strive to tailor our services to the particular strengths and needs of each of our client.
Eligibility
Graduate students pursuing MHC (Mental Health Counseling), MACP (Master of Counseling Psychology), MFT (Marriage and Family Therapy), and MSW (Master of Social Work) are all eligible to apply. If your degree program differs from those listed, please inquire about your eligibility. We try to accommodate supervision needs as best as we can, however, it is not guaranteed that we are able to fulfill a particular program’s requirements. CHS and the applicant’s school must have a signed learning agreement completed by the start of their internship start date. Interns are expected to complete a minimum of 700 hours (approximately 20 hours per week for at least 10 months). Minimum internship period commitment: September until last week of June. Internships start date will be negotiated with intern, school, and agency. For our Mental Health Department, Tuesday is required for weekly staff meetings and onsite training. Please note that start and ending dates of internships are determined by CHS calendar and not the interns’ program schedules.

Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Internships
Interns will go through an evolution in their time at CHS. The first month of internship is focused on providing training and structure to help you begin your journey as a clinician. Caseloads will vary between 5 and 10 clients in the first several months. In a “typical” 20-hour-a-week, you will spend approximately 60% in direct service, 20% in indirect service delivery–documentation/client files and 20% in training and supervision. A typical internship caseload will consist of 12-15 clients.
We recognize our interns are not considered primary therapists, they carry a limited caseload of clients and are supervised by experienced and trained clinicians. Please note that interns will not be guaranteed supervision with an Approved Clinical Supervisor as these supervisors typically work with our employees, however interns will be supervised by fully licensed clinicians. The limited caseload provides necessary time for training, supervision, case management including but not limited to treatment planning, documentation and maintenance of assigned client files.
Community Based Intensive Services Internship Opportunities:
- Infant-Early Childhood Mental Health(IEC): We provide relationship-focused interventions to parents, foster parents, or other primary caregivers with children ages birth through five years old. Children and parents often need help recovering from the effects of early trauma, loss, family conflict, addiction, abuse and stress. Sometimes parenting is not what parents expect it to be, or other challenges like depression or anxiety, and sleep or feeding challenges can make caring for a new baby difficult. All of these things can greatly impact the development of the child and the parent-child relationship. The treatment models used at CHS are evidence-based and include Promoting First Relationships and the Child-Parent Psychotherapy model for working with trauma. We believe when parents are nurtured and supported themselves, they are better able to meet the needs of their children. Interns in the IEC program are based at our 170th office but spend the majority of their time out of the office, visiting clients in their homes, or “third places” in King and Snohomish Counties.
Eligibility
- Students studying for their MACP (Master of Counseling Psychology), MFT (Marriage and Family Therapy), MSW (Master of Social Work) are all eligible to apply. If your degree program differs from those listed, please inquire about your eligibility. Also inquire about the unique requirements of MFT and MSW degrees as we may not be able to accommodate some of those.
- CHS and the applicant’s school must have a signed learning agreement completed by the start of their internship start date.
- Interns are expected to complete a minimum of 700 hours (approximately 20 hours per week) or the minimum hours required by their school’s programs.
